The Tuna That Started It All

The Tuna That Started It All

This is my dad, Captain Herb, with the biggest tuna he ever caught.

This was the tuna that started it all.

Back then, he was fishing out of Newport and doing something a little different. He realized he could take better care of his catch and offer it as the premium tuna that it is.

Instead of selling everything to the cannery, he took great pride in handling each fish with care and started selling directly to families off the dock. People loved it and would travel from as far away as Nevada to get their hands on the Best Tuna Around. Once word got out, people were hooked.

As demand grew, he started canning his catch and became the first fisherman to can his own fish under his own label. The quality was so much better than what people thought canned tuna could be.

Decades later, that is still what we do (and we still have some of those same early customers, too).

From my boat to your table is still at the heart of everything.

If you look closely, this is the image that inspired our original tuna label. Over the years it has changed and evolved, but it always traces back to this. And it has always been Captain Herb’s original artwork. He is not only a fisherman, but an artist too.

Almost 50 years later, it still feels very connected to those early days. Same fisheries. Same care. Same focus on quality.

I feel really lucky to carry this forward, and even more grateful to share it with you.
